- Plan out the space you have available for storage. Place any items that you will need to access often in the front of the storage space. Allow some space between stored items for access.
- Make a detailed list of your stored items. Keep the inventory list in a safe place at home or place it in a safe deposit box.
- Use storage boxes that are heavyweight and the same dimensions for better stacking. Make sure they can hold 25-30 pounds. Avoid overloading each box (to prevent damge to items).
- List all the contents within each box on all four sides of the box. Put some identification on each box (such as a number or a code). Seal boxes with strong tape.
- If there are boxes that are lighter, place those lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes.
- Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in packing paper (or bubble wrap) and placed in dish pack boxes. Stack these boxes (with fragile contents) on top. Be careful that the boxes will not fall.
- Put your storage boxes on 2"x 4" boards to prevent any dampness from ruining the contents. Any concrete floor may become cold and damp (even in the desert).
- Large appliances make excellent packing cases for blankets, towels, tablecloths and clothes.
- Garden equipment (rakes, shovels, hoes, and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside one another.
- Tables with removable legs should be taken apart to save space.
- Sofas can be stored on end to save floor space. Always lay down a protective waterproof cover under the sofa or loveseat on the floor. Cushions should be wrapped in plastic sheets and placed on top.
- Cover stuffed furniture with dust covers to protect against dust.
- If you stand mattresses on end, be sure to prop them up so they stand straight. Otherwise, they may get bent out of shape and become lumpy.
- Large glass-framed pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in crates marked FRAGILE and stacked on end.
- Furniture with drawers can be used as storage places for knick knacks, china, silverware, and small items. Wrap in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent damage to the items.
